The decision to seek counseling is never an easy one. It involves opening up to someone about issues which may be intensely personal. It involves being willing to take a risk. For people who may be a member of a community that has a history of being stigmatized or oppressed, it can be even more difficult. Depression, anxiety and trauma can all intensify the difficulties in moving through life in a meaningful and satisfying manner. As a therapist, it is my role to be supportive and non-judgemental and to work together with my clients to find solutions to life’s hardships.
In one form or another, I have been working as a counselor, therapist and activist since the 1980s. I worked for many years as a Licensed Substance Abuse Counselor. When I came out as Trans in the late 90s, I began working as a volunteer and activist. Finally, in 2008, I returned to UT to complete a graduate degree in Clinical Social Work.
